Berlin reports Dunkirk captured after heavy fighting with 40 000 prisoners and vast booty seized. German commanders say the entire Belgian and French coast to the Somme is now occupied. Air raids destroy hundreds of allied planes as Nazi forces press westward amid new offensives.
The French admiralty says all allied units abandoned Dunkerque and destroyed supplies, leaving the city to Germany. Seven French destroyers plus a supply ship were lost during embarkation. about 300 000 to 335 000 men evacuated. German high command reports 40 000 captives and substantial material taken. Final action involved marines and 300 warships used in the evacuation.
American correspondents en route toward the English Channel reports sighting German specialized troops within occupied territory as part of a large soldier movement. The observers could not confirm whether these troops were headed south into France or toward the coast for an England hopoff. Eleven girls were killed and thirty wounded in a German bombing at a Paris area girls' school, with four described as blown to pieces.

Olathe Kansas June 4 John Capps 48 a farm worker was killed when a bolt of lightning struck the wagon he drove. The horses and a colt accompanying the team also died. Capps worked on the George J Wulff farm near Spring Hill Kansas His wife survives In Kansas City the same storm disabled five streetcars hit the First Church of Christ Scientist steeple and a residence and burned a trolley wire but no injuries were reported.

Washington June 4 President Roosevelt accepted the resignation of Charles Edison secretary of the navy effective June 24. Edison resigns to seek the governorship of New Jersey on the Democratic ticket. He said the shipbuilding program and plans for its expansion are in good condition and the fleet is in being. Roosevelt praised his cabinet service in reply.

Washington June 4 Congressional tax leaders were reported to be considering a boost in the pending tax bill to more than 1 billion dollars. One proposal would broaden the income tax base and raise rates on incomes under 6000 dollars while a plan discussed by Morgenthau with Harrison and Doughton would add about 400 million to the bill. Details of the formula were not disclosed.

Berlin reports the army high command assumes final authority over censorship of mail, telephone and telegraph between the Reich and neutral nations. Under Colonel General Wilhelm Keitel no news on military, economic or political matters may be sent if it could endanger the Reich or allied states. Non belligerent country communications must be sent only by licensed firms or individuals.
Local grain men report good conditions for wheat in Douglas county and Lawrence trade area with widespread healthy heads and potential for solid yields if weather stays favorable. Chinch bugs injure some upland wheat, but overall harvest is three weeks off and combines likely to dominate. oats also appear promising.

Kansas City June 4 Marie Ogden 30 must finish serving a two year prison term for vote fraud. She was released February 28 from Alderson WVa after the government waived 144 days of a 1936 sentence. Ogden, a 12th ward Democratic judge, preferred not to report to probation. FBI agents arrested her. probation officials ordered her return to prison.
