Coal at fault in states with highest carbon dioxide emissions

The Associated Press analyzes 2003 state by state carbon dioxide emissions. Texas leads total emissions, powered by coal, while per capita Wyoming emits the most CO2. Idaho has the lowest per person CO2, aided by hydro power. The report notes economic and geographic factors, plus policy and transit impacts on emissions.

Kansas coal share rises, CO2 emissions stay high

Kansas emits about 29 metric tons per person and ranks 13th nationally. Electric generation accounts for nearly 38 million metric tons in 2003, while coal-fired plants produced 75 percent of 2005 electricity. Sunflower Electric plans two 700 MW coal plants near Holcomb, amid a national climate debate.
