The government filed a condemnation suit in U S District Court for 1 525 acres in Jefferson County needed for the Perry Dam and Reservoir north west of Lawrence. Total compensation proposed to landowners in Topeka Meriden Oskaloosa Ozawkie Salina Wichita and Lawrence is 272 875 about 180 an acre. The Corps has purchased 340 tracts covering about 20 000 acres and 42 000 acres will be needed for the 12 200 surface acre permanent pool with the dam flooding about 25 000 acres. Additional land will be for access roads and recreation and hunting areas.
