Voters sparse as planning moves toward unified district

Only about 10 percent of Lawrence's 13 000 registered voters cast ballots on Tuesday. The Douglas County Planning Board will draft a new plan to present to voters on September 8. If the September election fails the issue returns to the Legislature. The plan would place all nonhigh school territory in a single high school district across roughly 300 square miles. The board meets next on Saturday June 13 in the Courthouse, and a one unit district is unlikely at this stage.
