Prairie Settlers Endured Fire Destruction and Quantrill Raid
A reminiscence from a publisher’s daughter recounts prairie life in eastern Kansas. She recalls scarce water, backbreaking farming with oxen, and frequent prairie fires threatening homes and crops. The narrative covers stagecoach travel, Lawrence raids by Quantrill’s band in 1863, a butcher father surviving the assault, and the family’s move to Lawrence before rebuilding.
