Perkins near reopening after fire at Lawrence's

Longtime inmate seeks delay before murder trial in Douglas County

Douglas County Jail’s longest serving inmate, 21 year old Rontarus Washington Jr., has been granted another delay before his murder trial. He is charged with first degree murder and aggravated burglary for the Nov 7 2014 death of Justina Altamirano Mosso in Cedarwood Apartments. The trial is now set for Oct 22 to Nov 2 this year after multiple defense driven postponements.

City plans canopy removal on Massachusetts Street walkway

Lawrence officials aim to remove the canopy above the sidewalk behind 800 block Massachusetts Street after about 50 years. Building manager Jason Stowe says the city installed it five decades ago and initial repairs were considered but other priorities emerged.

Kansas collects 108 million more tax dollars in May

Kansas reported a May tax intake of 555 million, far above the projected 447 million, yielding a 24.1 percent surplus and bringing the fiscal year total to nearly 6.3 billion. Officials attributed the May surge to late April income tax payments processed in May and noted a rare stretch without a 12 month surplus since January 1989.
