A narrative traces Weaver's at Ninth and Massachusetts in Lawrence as national chains appear and big boxes spread. Lawrence's Department Store has served residents for 154 years since 1857 when New Yorker Lathrop Bullene arrived in the Kansas Territory seeking a new business and home, but his start was cut short after two days.
The Weaver family lineage dates to 1857 with Bullene's Dry Goods and later Weaver's Department Store. Since 1886, three generations have run Weaver's in Lawrence, Kansas, maintaining a loyalty-based model with personalized services such as free gift wrapping and delivery. Current president Joe Flannery notes the store’s independence and downtown commitment as keys to longevity.
