Johnson County leaders and residents celebrated the addition of three photographs to the courthouse mural highlighting Black history. The new images, depicting two all black schools in 1910 and 1949, complete a broader message about the county and its people. Oscar Johnson of the local NAACP helped push the update, noting the community’s high expectations and missed opportunities for recognizing Black contributions. The murals, funded by a $22,000 arts commission project begun 18 months earlier, line the courthouse entrance and now include depictions of birthplaces, schools, churches, and old city halls. Karen Lyman, chair of the arts committee, said officials welcomed Johnson’s input without political pressure.
Scott Lynn, a Shawnee Mission Northwest graduate and UMKC student, built Virtumundo Inc in three years from a $1000 start. The Kansas City firm uses location based and email targeted advertising, claiming over 5 million user profiles and more than $20 million in annual revenue. Clients include AT&T Wireless, Chase Manhattan Bank, Visa, and InterCasino. The company gained Forbes credit for CoolSavings.com’s public debut and runs Tre Loot as its flagship site with a cartoon monkey mascot.
Economist H Edwin Overcast challenged the Kansas Corpora tion Commission staff plan to cut Western Resources KGE rates by 92 million while raising KPL rates by 262 thousand. He argued cost shifting between KGE and KPL is illogical and that federal regulators prefer not to equalize costs. The hearing on Western’s 150 million rate request began May 17 and may wrap early next week.
