Trails celebration expands Lawrence area routes

Local volunteers celebrate National Trails Day as Carl Ringler coordinates a four mile cleared stretch at Clinton State Park. A rugged Mountain bike ride starts 10 a.m. Saturday from the park overlook on the Wild Dog Trail part of the planned 4 800 mile American Discovery Trail linking eight national trails. Riders should expect ticks and insects and bring water and tire repair gear. The ADT route halves use roads, but much remains to be cleared around the lake. Ringler seeks input from hikers hunters bikers and groups with stake in the trail. A second event at 9 a.m. Saturday features a hike led by Jackie Wedel along the George Latham Hiking Trail.

Western Kansas rattlesnake roundup faces protest

One-car wreck kills local man near Lawrence

A 47-year-old Lawrence man, Victor J. Wilkins, was killed when a 1981 Dodge station wagon went off U S Highway 59 four miles south of Lawrence near Pleasant Grove Hill at 11 43 p m Tuesday. His brother Robert D. Wilkins, 50, was in serious condition after a Life Flight transfer to Kansas University Medical Center. The car struck an embankment and rolled, both unbelted. Authorities note Victor likely drove straight instead of following the curve. Ohio address listed for Robert questioned by locals. Prosecutors consider charges against Mohammed Al Raqabani in a separate May crash near Lawrence.
