London reports 1 036 RAF bombers struck Essen near the Krupp works as German civilians flee the Rhineland. Cologne and other cities endured heavy raids. Churchill vows greater raids with US aid forthcoming. Canter bury and Ipswich attacked as Rommel faces setbacks in North Africa.
Pi Republicans scored a five to two majority on the Illinois Supreme Court. Incumbents who lost were Paul Farthing of Belleville and Elwyn R. Shaw of Freeport. Circuit Judge William J. Fulton defeated Shaw and Justice June C. Smith retained his seat against Dick H. Mudge. Republicans carried 48 of 57 counties. two justices Wilson and Gunn were elected without opposition.
Australia’s Prime Minister John Curtin declared no invasion risk and welcomed American reinforcements. In China, Chiang Kai-shek’s forces recaptured Shakichen and fought Japanese troops near Kinhwa and Chuhsien as fighting spread in several eastern provinces. MacArthur says three Japanese midget submarines were found near Sydney after an attack attempt.
London reports a United Nations convoy carrying American and British war supplies to Russia has reached a North Russian port after five days and nights of heavy fighting with German U boats and over 100 Nazi planes. The admiralty notes limited Allied losses and credits crew and escorts for delivering reinforcements despite harsh, near daylight conditions. Flying Officer Alastair Hay, wounded, was rescued after his Hurricane was catapulted from a ship.
Detroit June 2 Chrysler Corp closed its Dodge truck plant that employs 3 000 after about 700 workers demonstrated to protest the transfer of 20 Black workers. Management reported 350 left at their machines and 700 protested outside. Morris Field and U A W C I O officials defended equal treatment per policy and constitution.
The Coast Guard, expanding rapidly as part of naval service for the war, raises the eligible enlistment age from 35 to 55 years. The change reflects wartime staffing needs and aims to bolster recruiting efforts across the service.
Dr. George W. Denny Jr announces the June 18 topic Should the Draft Age Be Lowered with Brig Gen Lewis B Hershey as main speaker. Enrollment in the University of Kansas summer session appeared likely to exceed last summer’s total of about 1,000 students. By 3 pm, a long line of registrants had shortened but the staff remained busy as 1,007 persons had passed the registration desk.

Douglas county announces a smaller June tire quota per locality. Lawrence city crews receive 5 new tires 24 recaps 15 tubes for cars and 26 new tires 40 recaps 34 tubes for trucks. Outside city Lawrence Baldwin Palmyra area set at 6 24 15 for cars and 26 40 33 for trucks. Nine new passenger cars are allowed county wide in June.

Washington reports that states without minimum trucking and reciprocal regulations adopted them to ease war material transport. Secretary Jesse Jones said changes affect about two thirds of states, enacted under emergency powers after federal guidance. Reciprocal license allows war materials to move across borders with fewer license plate requirements. Axle limits range from 18 000 to 40 000 pounds, widths up to 96 inches, heights up to 12 34 feet, and lengths up to 85 feet solo or 45 feet with trailer.

The Socialist Party named Dr Maynard C Krueger, University of Chicago economics professor, its national chairman to succeed Norman Thomas who declined to serve again after four presidential runs. Krueger pledged no blessing for this war or any war, and the 1986 chairman Norman Thomas stepped down.

East west traffic on Twenty third street is detoured north to Twentieth street while the Twenty third and Massachusetts intersection is closed. Workmen remove old pavement in preparation for new surface as city bus routes shift to New Hampshire street and omit Vermont and Winona. A detour sign at Vermont caused drivers to backtrack after a dead end. police directed motorists with a north arrow.

The proposed welfare budget for the coming year mirrors last year but seeks to lower the county levy from three to two mills aided by expected increases in federal and state refunds. Davalos takes temporary assignment to Sherman Field at Fort Leavenworth. Lozier-Broderick and Gordon offices remain in Kansas City, Missouri until plant site administration quarters are ready.
C Edward Murray a Wichita lawyer assumed duties as price attorney for Kansas in the office of production management. Murray will operate under James B Nash also of Wichita who was recently named chief attorney.
Hercules Powder company says it has enough staff for at least six weeks on the Sunflower Ordnance Works project except guards. Applications will be accepted by mail. in person Friday June 5 only for professionals. Applicants should register with the U S Employment Service and await interviews as needed. Lozier Broderick and Gordon urge continued contact for workers who helped construction to join operations later. Officials deny rumors that construction workers cannot transfer to operating jobs and stress forming an operating force from the start.
More than 4000 members and guests will attend a banquet at the Masonic Temple on Wednesday evening June 3. Al F Williams Topeka attorney will speak on the Citadel of Democracy with Dr William L Burdick as toastmaster. H D Johnson is general chairman and Eastern Star ladies will serve. Reservations accepted until Wednesday noon.
Sterling Wanda aged 45 died in a Richmond California shipyard after guiding a buckling crane load away from 24 workers. He chose to ride the toppled machine to the ground, sacrificing his life to prevent injury to others.
