The Lawrence City Band presents Wednesday night performances in summer 2006. June 7 Classics for summer nights and June 14 Flag Day lead to a season of heritage and patriotic themes including June 21 first day of summer and July 4 festivities. July 12 features a children's concert and July 19 wraps with a grand finale. Brown Bag Concerts run noon to 1 pm at Ninth and Massachusetts with weekly acts June 1 Billy Spears and the Beer Bellies through July 27 the Konza Swamp Band.
Lawrence plans a traffic safety ordinance to ban both hand held and hands free cell phones for drivers. The proposal, discussed by the Traffic Safety Commission, would surpass New York state and other bans, according to Russ Rader of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Douglas County and local agencies acknowledge limited readiness for a pandemic flu. Emergency Management director Paula Phillips says plans are evolving though gaps remain, as state and national guidance push standardization and biologic incident readiness across the Health Department, Lawrence Memorial Hospital, and Kansas University.
State and federal officials signed an agreement on Wednesday detailing Kansas plans to spend 1.1 million dollars in federal assistance to prepare for a pandemic influenza outbreak. Page 7A.
