Yeltsin vows closer Russia Lithuania ties in pivot
President Yeltsin promised close ties between the Russian Federation and Lithuania in Moscow to Lithuania’s leader Vytautas Landsbergis. The move clashes with Gorbachev’s blockade policy, which seeks to force Lithuania to suspend its independence declaration. It is unclear if Russia can or would supply Lithuania with gas or oil upon sovereignty. Moldova’s legislature recognizing Lithuania’s independence adds to tensions.
