Crop Prospects Dented by Heat in Kansas Week
Topeka June 1 AP A state board of agriculture reports rapid decline in Kansas wheat prospects from scorching heat and light rainfall east of the Blue River and north of the Missouri. Some regions show good yields south central and southwest, but overall crop conditions are uncertain. Oats suffer from heat, hay and pastures slow but not permanently damaged. Early corn looks promising with adequate rain and cooler temperatures needed for satisfactory yields. Strawberry yields declined with dry weather and first cuttings were generally light.

Washington Steamer Sinks in Dense Fog near New Harbor
In a fogbound harbor the large steel steamer Washington sank after a collision with a steel barge loaded with oil. About 200 passengers and 250 crew were moved to safety as lifeboats were launched and the ship’s orchestra played to calm panicked passengers. The Washington Irving, the ship’s name, was said to be the largest river passenger boat, having just departed for Albany. Captain Deming steered toward the Jersey shore, and the disaster prompted a broad evacuation and distress whistle. Warrant for Game Warden R C Carr, from Topeka, appeared in Lawrence justice court on an assault charge. The writ was issued by the Justice of the Peace John Clark upon a complaint by Richard Jackman. The case was not held. Carr returned to Topeka.
