A vast sheet of water sweeps the countryside leaving desolation for miles. Homes and property vanished in the disaster, with communities counting the losses and seeking relief. Residents describe the scene as a waterlogged ruin spreading beyond the horizon.
North side of the river lay in ruin as flood waters swept homes away and damaged business. Rescue boats, food drops, and medical aid operated from morning until night with Mayor Selig coordinating relief. Many residents evacuated to elevated shelters, bridges failed, and looting prompted police action while lingering hardships included power, gas, and water shortages.
Indirect reports from Kansas City detail the Kaw and Missouri river flooding. Bridges collapsed and supplies dwindled as 200 north-side residents endured high water, with aid efforts hampered by widespread communication failures and looming power outages.
Special to the Journal reports a catastrophic flood along the Kaw River in Topeka Kansas. West of Kansas Avenue and east of it homes and businesses flood wrecking property and leaving thousands homeless. Many families flee to public shelters as boats and search efforts attempt to locate the missing and recover bodies. The disaster devastates residences, streets, and utilities with losses running into millions of dollars.
Tornado strikes Gainesville Georgia afternoon killing between 109 and 500 people and causing extensive structural damage. Other items note varyingly priced floor goods, a typhoid death in Colorado, and historical society aims to preserve a Northwest Territory capitol building in Vincennes Indiana amid its impending demolition.
Promoters led by Dr Frances Diekingen announce the planned New Chilagu Daily to feature women’s perspectives and avoid sensational content. Incorporation papers filed in Springfield show capital at $100,000 with Mabel Brown and Allan S Blum among backers. Market Street offices and printing equipment are secured as aims include lively clubs coverage and timely news.
Secretary Shaw's personal check was refused at the auditoriums in Chicago by a young woman cashier only to have the secretary later presented with letters and other proofs. A man had advised Shaw earlier that week about his identity. The secretary then produced a nine id and the check for 3235 was ultimately cashed.
Report from New York claims the Tungra Badra irrigation impound will dwarf Nile storage. The dam would run nearly a mile long and 150 feet high at Hospet in the Madras presidency, forming a 40 mile lake 150 square miles in area and holding about 200 billion cubic feet of water. Also notes German naval practice of memorial tablets for sailors.
