Education supporters protest funding cuts at Capitol

Several hundred education supporters gathered outside the Capitol to protest funding cuts and warn that Gov. Sam Brownback’s plan to reduce state income tax could lessen revenue for schools. Kathy Cook of Kansas Families for Education warned of unprecedented school cuts while Brownback argues tax changes are needed to attract business and boost the economy. House Minority Leader Paul Davis said next year will pit restoring education funds against tax cuts for big business. Since Brownback’s term began, base state aid per student has fallen by 232 to 3,780, the lowest since 1999, a point Brownback defends as balancing the budget.
