Judge rules against newspaper in open records case
A Douglas County judge ruled Friday that Lawrence police may withhold dispatch recordings from the public following a deadly high speed pursuit last summer. The Lawrence Journal World sued the city and county seeking access under the Kansas Open Records Act. Judge Paula Martin said the recordings are part of a criminal investigation record, and thus may be kept secret. Nam Duk Cho faces second degree murder charges for a crash that killed Judith Vellucci. His trial is scheduled for August 11. The newspaper had argued for transparency and public access to police dispatch records. The city released the recording after it was shown in open court.
