McLouth gears up for a three day festival led by the Steam Engine Show and Threshing Bee. Bill Robinson, with the McLouth family, describes the event as a nostalgic showcase of industrial age steam powered farm equipment featuring music food and competitions.
The 39th Annual McLouth Steam Engine Show and Threshing Bee runs Friday through Sunday with exhibits including a Blacksmith shop miniature steam engines antique cars engines and tractors log-sawing and wood shingle sawing and train rides. The 1996 Tractor of the Year is a 1918 Rock Island owned by Gayle McDonald Holton and the 1996 Engine of the Year is a 1913 Huber plow engine owned by Del Seuser Leavenworth. Admission is 5 for all three days and the grounds are three blocks south of the junction of Kansas highways 16 and 92, McLouth 15 miles north of Lawrence.
Friday events run 10 a m to 2 30 p m threshing demonstrations parade at 1 30 p m antique tractor pull at 7 p m patio dance from 8 p m to midnight. Saturday features mud volleyball at 8 a m sheep dog trials at 9 a m pedal power tractor pull at 10 a m stage show at 7 p m. Sunday includes church services at 9 30 a m and 10 a m to 2 30 p m country dancing exhibition at 2 p m miniature hot rod pull at 4 p m and draft horse pull at 8 p m.
Governor Bill Graves authorized a 5000 state reward for information leading to arrests and conviction of those responsible for a July 21 triple murder in a Salina home. The total rewards reach 19000 with private contributions, sourced from the state Emergency Fund to aid investigators and pressure leads.
