The NAACP calls for the Senate to reject Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas, labeling his philosophy as detrimental to Black interests. Dr William F Gibson, NAACP board chair, says the seat should go to an African American but focuses on whether Thomas fits the court. The group issued a draft statement Tuesday.
In Moscow, Presidents Bush and Gorbachev announced plans to invite Middle Eastern leaders to an October peace conference. They said foreign ministers will address remaining impediments while stressing direct negotiations between parties. Israel offered cautious reaction through spokesman Yossi Ahimeir.
