One Hurt in Wreck on Richland Overbrook Road

Hybuard W. Maichel a 20 year old Route 2 Richland resident is in fair condition in Lawrence Memorial Hospital ICU after a one car crash on Richland Overbrook Road six miles east of Berryton Shawnee County. Investigator Duane Warner said Maichel had several facial cuts and loss of blood after the car left the road and struck a six foot embankment while he slept at the wheel. The 1955 car was demolished and there was no other occupant.

Good Government Is Stressed as Vital

Dale Helmers of the Citizens Association of Kansas City urged Lawrence Rotary members that strong city government drives growth. He cited Kansas City's 1940 to 1959 expansion with 1,700 manufacturing firms, praised open competitive exams, and criticized current petty bickering. Helmers urged charter government with a professional city manager to curb political appointments and improve efficiency.

Baldwinite Man Faces Hearing Over Calf Thefts

Preliminary hearing set for 10:30 a.m. Monday in County Court for Ambrose J. Scott of Baldwin Route 3 on charges he sold two calves taken from Walter George farm Route 2 southeast of Lawrence. Bond $1,500. in county jail. Sheriff Broeker says third calf sale under review. Calves sold for 67.50 and 30 dollars. Scott claims he purchased them from a man met at Lawrence Sale Barn.

Abilene Feed Lots Sued for 104000 Damages and Injunction

Eight Abilene homeowners sue Abilene Feed Lots Inc seeking 104000 in damages and a permanent injunction alleging flies and noxious odors render their homes unfit for occupancy. The plant can handle 5000 cattle and began operations about two years ago on the west edge of Abilene. Plaintiffs seek 72000 in actual damages and 32000 in punitive damages with individual claims from 3000 to 15000.

KU freshmen to receive adviser packets by Aug. 15

Lawrence area notes say Kansas University College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will mail freshman adviser packets including a booklet, adviser assignments, and an appointment card around Aug. 15.
