Lawrence prepares 2018 budget with tax and rate hikes

Commissioners set the maximum 2018 budget at 255 million dollars, boosting the property tax rate by 1.25 mills which equals about 25 dollars more annually for a 175 thousand dollar home. The plan includes renewing a 0.55 percent citywide sales tax for 10 years, funding infrastructure transit and affordable housing, projected to raise over 116 million. Utility rates would rise about 6 percent, adding roughly 65 dollars per year to residents and generating about 3 million more for water and sewer next year to cover rising costs.

City trims 11 vacant posts to save city funds

The plan eliminates 11 vacant positions including city auditor, code enforcement, three utility meter readers, and roles at Sports Pavilion Lawrence. Michael Eglinski held the auditor post until July 14 before resigning. The 11 cuts could save about $630,000 in 2018. City Hall reporter Rochelle Valverde can be reached at 832-6314.
