Commissioners weigh SRS office fate in Lawrence dispute
SRS commissioners declined to discuss specifics but signaled focus on the Lawrence closure plan. Douglas County legislators urged Gov Brownback to keep the 87 employee Lawrence office open, citing travel barriers for vulnerable clients and potential lease-related savings losses. Officials note many services require in person visits or cannot be done online, risking shifted costs to communities.

Kaw water plant faces strain as sand buildup cripples intake
City crews pump sand from the Kaw plant, enabling minimal operation while an outside contractor begins work. A second plant at Clinton Lake could serve the city but strains with high water use. Repairs include reactivating a degraded intake, fixing debris screen and clarifying filter, and a $7 million budget item for the intake repair ahead of Corps of Engineers lake releases that will raise river debris.
