The Federal Communications Commission set two changes to equal radio and TV time rules. Requests for equal time must be filed within one week of the broadcast. Claimants must prove they are legally qualified candidates when seeking equal time or filing discrimination complaints.
Henry C Deckwa 82 of 1121 R I St died this morning at Norris Rest Home after a career as a farmer in the Clearfield area. Funeral 2 p.m. Saturday Evangelical United Brethren Church burial Clearfield Cemetery. Survivors include two sons two sisters six brothers six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. George M Todd 82 of Trenton died today at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after visiting a daughter here. Funeral 2 p.m. Saturday Christian Church Trenton burial there. Survived by another daughter a brother and eight grandchildren with a prior death of a wife and son.
Robin Jane Roper six of Leavenworth died Wednesday at Fort Leavenworth hospital. She was the daughter of Sgt Maurice J Roper and Mrs Roper formerly of Lawrence. Funeral services set for 1 30 p m Friday at First Presbyterian Church Leavenworth with burial in Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery. Survived by sister Karen and grandmother Mrs Laura Roper both of Leavenworth.
Bruce F Proffitt 71 died Wednesday at his home 639 Vt. Street He was a World War I veteran Funeral arrangements will be announced by Rumsey Funeral Home Survivors include sisters Mrs Eva Buckingham Gothenberg Nebraska and Mrs Essie Copeland Ness City
About 150 peace officers from Kansas and neighboring states attend the 13th annual Peace Officers Training School at Kansas University. The program runs through Aug. 1 with courses in evidence, ballistics, firearms, fingerprinting, and police science. Sponsors include the Kansas Peace Officers Association and KU entities.
More than 40 House Democrats organized to back a labor bill favorable to unions. At a breakfast with Rep. John F. Shelley, 43 Democrats pledged to oppose both the committee bill and a tougher administration substitute and to back a stricter financial reporting and disclosure measure.
President Eisenhower named Robert D. Murphy a veteran diplomat to be undersecretary of state for political affairs. At the same time he nominated Livingston T. Merchant to succeed Murphy as deputy undersecretary. Murphy, from Milwaukee, has served in the State Department since 1920.
Lawrence area cucumbers produce foot long giants with several growers reporting one to two foot long specimens including O M Daniel who lives south of Lawrence on US 59. The Baldwin Golf Association invitational will be held Sunday August 9 with entries due by 10 am and a $3 50 entry fee plus 500 in prizes. Lunch will be served. Kansas Forestry Fish and Game Director Dave Leahy says final engineering for the Douglas County State Lake near Vinland should start soon with soundings boundary surveys and other final survey work. The lake would cover about 200 acres with a 600 acre park and the state Commission recently authorized final engineering. Mrs Louis Rockland of 1610 Mass St says 16 night blooming cereus plants should bloom tonight inviting locals to view the show.
Explosions at a chemical distributing depot in Portland and Middletown shook two communities and lit the predawn sky. No deaths or injuries were reported as a 13 000 gallon alcohol tank exploded, with 13 tanks total in the blaze that fire officials say started accidentally.
In Cincinnati Ohio twelve members of Union Local 100 allied with a rival group were arrested after seizing the union headquarters following a brawl. They faced warrants for trespassing and disorderly conduct as the rival faction seeks to form a separate local. Robert Morris claimed the rebels had ousted corrupt officers and sought international intervention.
Chattanooga first baseman Jesse Levan received a lifetime ban from baseball after being linked to attempts to fix games. Teammate Waldo Gonzales drew a one year suspension. Levan had been hitting .337 for the Lookouts and is a 13 year minor league veteran with past trials in Washington and Philadelphia.
John C. Denton, 40, was named second president of Spencer Chemical Co in Kansas City Missouri as part of a revised executive staff. Kenneth A. Spencer, founder, became chairman and CEO. C Y Thomas was named vice chairman. John P. Miller and Joe E. Culpepper were elected senior vice presidents. Byron M. Kern became a vice president. The changes aim for continuity and stronger growth.
Assistant Secretary J. Graham Parsons told a Senate subcommittee that accusations of waste and inefficiency in U S aid to Vietnam are reckless and sensational. He warned listeners to judge whether the program is a fiasco or a properly administered, vital contribution to a people’s freedom.
A Senate subcommittee heard 74 year old Constantine Panunzio of Los Angeles recounts the Army Mule Corps era and laments treatment of retired college professors. He cites 42 percent receiving about 101 dollars monthly and 78 percent under 100 dollars including non institution based pay. He urges income tax exemption on retirement income and asks about social security expansion and medical aid.
A 26 year old Lawrence man, Lennis Eugene Johnson, was shot in the chest with a .22 caliber pistol, collapsed on a neighbor’s porch after leaving his home at 725 Mo. St. He was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital and underwent bullet removal surgery. Police classified the incident as a possible attempted death by own action amid ongoing marital dispute and a restraining order. Johnson had been staying at the residence with his wife and step-daughter nearby, and the motive remains undetermined.

Eskridge, a 6-4 former KU left handed center forward and Marine Corps veteran, leaves Dick Harp’s coaching staff after three years to join a bowling firm. He played at Graceland JC in 41 42, served in the South Pacific, and held KU’s single half record in 1948. He coached at Shenandoah HS and Atchison HS before joining KU.
Memorial Hospital announces newborns and parentage including a baby boy for Mrs. Nancy E Bell Linwood and another baby boy for Mrs. Mary Jean Mehaffey 1737 Maple Lane. Also reported are several home births with parents listed in Oklahoma City Houston and De Soto among others.
In West Covina California a wealthy surgeon Dr Bernard Finch is held for trial on murder charges in the death of his wife Barbara Finch. prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty though a deputy district attorney notes he may not pursue it for the doctor's paramour Carole Tregoff. The case includes a so called murder kit found near the Finch home and testimony detailing the doctor and ex model’s intimate relationship and alleged involvement.
State Insurance Commissioner Frank Sullivan of Lawrence aged 63 recovers at home from a broken collar bone and two fractured ribs after slipping on stairs. He plans to return to his Topeka office Friday. The injury occurred last week in Benton Illinois during his brother’s funeral.
Bill Cox said a recent storm caused a rare citywide telephone outage. He noted the city patrols affected areas and stands ready to help. Cab drivers and others assist during emergencies, and police reported no unusual incidents Wednesday afternoon.
Thirteen Sunnyside barrack apartment buildings for Kansas University married students will be razed, leaving ten structures on the campus south slope. Bids to raze the frames open August 13, affecting 50 plus families who must relocate, with one building remaining as housing and a maintenance warehouse. Average rent is about 57 dollars monthly and includes utilities and kitchen appliances.
