President Roosevelt warns neutrals against offering asylum to axis leaders and says the United States will treat for peace with any non fascist Italian government as long as fascist ties are avoided. He cites plans to render war criminals and details aid to Sicily and Italian civilians.
The British government backed President Roosevelt’s call that neutral nations should not offer asylum to Axis leaders. Britain, the United States, and the Soviet Union discussed Mussolini’s possible escape and stated they were in full agreement on their stance.
Desperate German resistance at Orel falters under a massive Soviet push. Fresh units from France and Germany failed to halt the Red army, with reports of 38 000 German deaths and six mile gains as 40 villages were occupied. The German commander Col Gen Schmidt replaced by Col Gen Model reportedly ordered a last stand.
Italian forces in Milan refuse to fire on demonstrators while Premier Badoglio reshuffles commanders to curb unrest. Eisenhower's peace speech circulates in streets despite government bans. Troops face censorship, arrests rise as leaders doubt army policing. In the Pacific, U S troops push toward Munda airbase, with significant bombardment and ground advances continuing.
Washington reports a 3,100,000 decline in the civilian U S population between April 1, 1940 and March 1, 1943 due to armed services growth. London reports that all members of the Italian Fascist grand council except one have been arrested. The exception is unnamed but described as particularly radical. Trainloads of livestock and used farm implements have been sold through Journal-World classified ads.
The Waves mark one year of service with substantial growth and growing demand for their work. The Navy plans to triple enrollment by 1944 end, and President Roosevelt sends congratulatory remarks praising the Waves for accepting high responsibilities. The service notes that waves have freed sailors from shore duties to deploy a large task force at sea.
Berlin broadcast quoted by Associated Press said German heavy bombers attacked an allied convoy northwest of Portugal sinking one ship of 10 000 tons and hitting two others 7 000 and 8 000 tons. Allied sources did not confirm. A separate broadcast claimed six ships totaling over 50 000 tons sunk in 36 hours over the Atlantic with five more seriously damaged.
The funeral of Bishop Ernest Lynn Waldorf was held at Centenary Methodist church in Syracuse where he preached 36 years ago. Syracuse area Bishop Charles Wesley Flint led the service with several senior bishops and his four sons among active bearers. Waldorf previously served in Wichita Kansas City Chicago and other Midwest regions.
Allied reports say American and Canadian troops pushed deeper along the Mt Etna front in Sicily capturing Agira and advancing toward Recalbuto while Patton’s Seventh Army exploited breaches near Nicosia. Allied air forces struck Messina and bases near Rome as Eighth Army pressed through lower Etna slopes against German units.
The stock market index for 600 stocks fell from 50.9 to 49.9 points as of yesterday showing a modest decline in broad market performance.
Dr. Frank Stockman of Winthrop Chemical predicts U S army demand will reach five billion units weekly by year end. He notes current production shortfalls but expects full facilities by then to treat thousands of pneumonia and other infections. Pennicillin costs high per ounce and Fleming discovered it in 1929.
County agent Six reported 145 to 150 acres of Douglas county potatoes unharvested, with potential remaining acreage dropping to about 75 if digging continues. Lawrence Norton of the state USDA War Board was to file the county data with Des Moines to seek continued government market support for potatoes. The government has purchased 180 cars of Douglas potatoes in a week, with no local buyers reported.
Topeka reports 70s but no rain today as 100 degree highs persist regionally. Light showers totaled .19 to .83 inches in scattered spots with Topeka receiving a spritz. Midwest and Colorado records show highs near 105 while drought persists and cooling remains gradual.
In a Warnemunde raid RAF notes show bomb bursts destroyed most Ernst Heinkel Flugzeugwerke units, a Wulf 190 fighter producer. The attack damaged engine shops and naval Arsenal buildings, with little enemy response as gunners stayed distant. Sergt. I Raze of Pondcreek Oklahoma reported minimal fighter interference.
Allied authorities reported 77,000 prisoners taken in Sicily with 56,000 held by American forces. The total rose 2,000 over yesterday’s figure as North Africa headquarters issued the latest tally.
Officials report Lawrence population over 15000 and Douglas county over 27000 in spring census unofficial figures. State law requires governor proclamation to make Lawrence a first class city once certified, though council may delay action. Official 1943 city figures pending state board certification and next week’s release.
Dean Paul B. Lawson of the University of Kansas college will speak at the union service of Lawrence churches in South Park Sunday at 8 o'clock. Lawson is pastor of West Side Presbyterian Church. Mrs. H. Ray Cook will sing Beside Still Waters Spirit of God with accompanist Mrs. Paul C. Rankin. Dr. Harry Sisler will lead song and Rev. Chas. W. Thomas will preside.
Mrs. Sibyl Harvey Parker, 64, daughter of Harvey system founder, died in University of Kansas hospital. She survived by sister H Oakey Hall in California and brother Byron S. Harvey of Chicago. Funeral services set for Monday at the Parker home in Leavenworth.
Guy V. Keeler director of the Engineering Science Management War Training Program at the university has been invited to serve as chief speaker for the American Society of Personnel Management national board dinner at the Hotel Bellerive in Kansas City on August 7. Kansas City hosts the society's national headquarters.
Secretary Knox indicated that current limited island advances are preparation for powerful decisive thrusts against Japan's strategic strongpoints, signaling a planned shift in American Pacific warfare strategy.
The Rome radio in a French language broadcast to France spoke of a dilemma facing Italy under terms of unconditional surrender. The U S monitoring service noted no Italian broadcast to Italy on the line. The broadcast said Churchill and Roosevelt repeated the Casablanca formula and implied Italy must overthrow the Fascist party and allow Allied armies on Italian soil.
Deputy county treasurer A M Gardner reports only 615 licenses issued since June 20 for drivers and chauffeurs. About 15,000 applications are expected as the grace period ends with July 1 looming. Motorists are urged to apply before August 2 as post office checks on vehicle stamps may merge with license enforcement.
The United States Navy said the nonrigid airship K-74 was lost after a gunfire encounter with a surfaced enemy submarine. All but one crew member were rescued. the missing sailor is Isadore Stessel of Brooklyn. Helium-filled blimps are noted as a key tool against U boats in the Atlantic.
Fifteen mariners from two derelict craft were landed at Beaumont after 48 hours afloat in life rafts following a Gulf storm. Ten rescued men were from the 14 man crew of the sea going tug Titan which grounded, four were barge workers, four others still missing. Several in serious condition were hospitalized in Beaumont.
The Occi dental Life Insurance company of Los Angeles petitions the Kansas Supreme Court to compel State Treasurer Walter Wilson and Insurance Commissioner Charles F. Hobbs to refund 2536 dollars paid under protest for 1941 and 1942. The tax, imposed on premiums for the Federal Reserve Life Insurance company of Kansas City which was taken over in 1936, is challenged as not due since the Kansas City firm was not doing business those years.
Elmer Schaake, former Liberty Memorial high school coach, is appointed to the University of Kansas physical education staff along with Vernon Hayes and Howard Porter. Schaake will assist football coaching this fall under Jayhawks head coach Shenk. the expansion responds to Army Navy training programs on campus.
The Civil Air Patrol in the area conducted a night communications drill led by Lieut. George Berg with three reporting points including the county rock crusher University hill and areas south of town. Lieut. Eldon Willey oversaw the hill group while Lieut. John Linn ran the rock crusher and Capt. L. K. Zimmer directed the southern group flashing signals to the others. No calls were reported to sheriffs or police about the light signals.
The BBC said correspondents in Sicily reported that British cruisers and destroyers shelled the Italian mainland yesterday. Their target was a railway stretch along the shore at Crotone with bridges. It marks the second such allied strike on the Italian mainland.
