Brighton Father Sentenced for Chaining Sons to Basement
Roy Hamblin a 42 year old laborer was sentenced to 60 days in jail for cruelty to his two sons Jimmy 12 and Wayne 10 whom he chained to the basement to keep them from trouble. He was allowed to return to his WPA job but must spend nights in jail. Judge Frank P Coleman and Sheriff Louis Ballard ordered the punishment while preserving his relief employment. Their sister Lois 14 helped beat out a fire that started among rags in the basement.

Streamliner Hits Truck Killing One Man
A Union Pacific City of Salina streamliner struck a pickup near Perry, killing Mike Bahnmaier of Lecompton and injuring Fred Hildebrand, also of Lecompton. The 1934 Chevrolet and track were demolished, eyewitness Frank Worthington reported, as the train halted about a mile east of the crossing. Bahnmaier died shortly after, Hildebrand was hospitalized in shock with possible internal injuries. The crash marked the line’s first fatal accident since service began in 1935.

Ottawa bans heavy gas trucks after deadly wreck
Ottawa Kansas officials enacted an ordinance effective today banning gasoline transport trucks carrying more than 600 gallons from entering the business district after a Sunday accident on Main Street caused a fire that killed two people and destroyed five houses. In Tola, Kansas the city commission also passed a similar rule prohibiting such trucks from passing through the business district.
