A smash top demolition derby thrills spectators inside the new arena Friday evening at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. The fair runs today with events including a pedal tractor pull a livestock auction and an awards ceremony. A driver and a large furry passenger are rear ended during the derby with six derby cars piling up.
Cindy Maude, a Lawrence marketing professional and arts supporter, will be the Lawrence Arts Center’s interim CEO, effective Aug. 1. She previously owned Callahan Creek and serves as CEO emeritus, with consulting for Toyota in California. Maude has long supported the center and recently sat on its board of directors before resigning to take the post.
The Kansas economy contracted 0.7 percent annually in Q1 2017, while the U.S. grew 1.2 percent. BEA data show Kansas GDP slipped after a near flat 0.1 percent gain in Q4 2016. Kansas was one of seven states with GDP decline from Q4 2016 to Q1 2017.
The Lawrence Public Library invites the community to a party on Thursday on its lawn at 707 Vermont St to celebrate Summer Reading finishers. As of July 27, 1,678 kids completed 12 books or 30 hours, with adults and teens also progressing, though kids show a slight dip from last year.
