Kansas University announced on Monday that Kelly Reynolds will become the university’s director of state relations starting in August. Reynolds, a KU political science alumna and Wichita native, has lobbying experience in higher education and previously worked at Wichita State University Newman University and in campaign roles for John McCain. She will serve as the main KU contact with state policymakers and advocate for the university.
A preliminary hearing was waived by 20 year old Deanthony Wiley in a Johnson County District Court case charging him and three others with first degree felony murder and attempted aggravated robbery over the January killing of Shawnee gun shop owner John Bieker at She's a Pistol. Wiley plans to plead guilty later. The shooting occurred during a botched robbery that also involved his wife Rebecca.
Douglas County authorities charged a man with interference after an alleged incident with a girl at a shelter. He admitted following the girl for snacks and misrepresented his ID. He is also wanted in Mississippi for armed robbery. At a July preliminary hearing, Judge Fairchild ordered the case bound for trial. Bond set at 30000. Next court date August 24 for arraignment and plea.
The report shows most crashes stem from driver error and notes a long-term study due this fall. Over eight years fatal accidents averaged 0.5 percent of total crashes, with the Kansas Turnpike safer than rural four-lane highways. Rates in 2004 2008 declined from 2001 levels.
Judge Briscoe will relinquish the role after two years as chief judge of the 10th Circuit based in Denver. Timothy M. Tymkovich of Denver will succeed her, continuing his service on the 10th Circuit since 2003, which oversees federal district courts in Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Utah, and Wyoming. Briscoe noted the circuit’s vacancies were filled and praised staff resilience amid sequestration. She will remain an active judge.
