Local physician Wayne Hird dies after ultralight crash
Officials report Dr. Wayne Hird died of cardiac arrest when his ultralight aircraft crashed into a tree on the Lawrence Country Club golf course in 1985. The Lawrence school board weighs three options to balance enrollments at West and Central junior highs, with West expected to exceed Central by about 175 students next year, influenced by a former loose transfer policy, said Supt. Dan Neuenswander. Old Home Town notes include 1970 gun purchase rules in Kansas and a 1910 fire at Wilder Brothers shirt factory sparked by sun rays refracted from a window.
