Bell Atlantic Corp and GTE Corp plan a merger described as an equal, stock swap deal. The transaction, announced at a News conference, would create one of the largest telecoms entities in the United States with a reported value around 55 billion dollars.
Three Missionaries of Charity nuns were shot dead Monday in a passing car attack at a clinic for the disabled in Hodeida Yemen. The victims, two from India and one from the Philippines, wore blue bordered saris as police say a suspect Abdullah al Nashyi confessed and is unstable.

Don Imus and brother Fred propose using about 3,000 acres of state land and private property to develop a nonprofit ranch for chronically ill children. The state AG’s office probes alleged illegal bulldozing of the site 40 miles southwest of Santa Fe. Imus says no sleazy deal and would fund restoration if historical value exists. Public safety officials ordered razing as a safety hazard.
