GM workers approve new contract ending six day GM strike
The United Auto Workers voted 89.4 percent in favor of a settlement at the Warren GM Powertrain plant, ending a six day strike that halted four assembly lines in Michigan and Canada. About 2,500 workers walked out at Warren, with 19,300 GM employees affected nationwide. The deal includes 420 new Warren jobs, a $550 payout to pre July 14 payroll, and protections for wheel production through 2002. Some workers greet the contract as gains while others complain about limited job security and continued outsourcing concerns.
