Kansan Named Army Chief Rogers to lead U S Army staff

Ninth Street Closure Due to Heat Generated Pavement Break

Lawrence officials said Ninth Street from Emery Road to Iowa Street will close Thursday morning from 9 a.m. to noon to repair a pavement blow-up at Ninth Street and Emery Road. Only local traffic will be allowed while city crews fix the break. George Williams, public works director, announced the plan.

Peace talks fail to stop fighting in Lebanon

Speed-up tickets in Lawrence favor police in July court action

Lawrence Municipal Court tracks police speed-up tickets from July 12 through August. About 85 paid fines for legitimate tickets, 27 pleaded not guilty with August trial dates. Frivolous charges were questioned by Judge George Catt who suspended some fines and warned others.

Cattle herd drops to 133.5 million on July 1

The Agriculture Department reports the US cattle herd at 133.5 million on July 1, down 5 percent from a year earlier. Jan 1 inventory was 128 million, with calf crop at 46.9 million, down 7 percent. Beef cows fell 9 percent to 42.8 million. milk cows at 11.1 million declined 1 percent.
