Oklahoma City July 28 AP final appeals fill the air as voters prepare for tomorrow’s first statewide primary. Democrats face crowded governor and senatorial races while Republicans expect lighter turnout. Names include Murray Trapp Buttram and How ard plus candidates for eight House seats and the Pine fall.
A widespread outbreak of communist activities in northern and eastern Hunan and Kiangsi provinces followed reports of a Red advance on Changsha. Two communist bands joined to form a disciplined 10,000 strong force for the Changsha attack and reportedly defeated nationalist forces there. A Red force captured Nanchang after a lengthy siege, and about three thousand Nanchang refugees reached Kiukiang on the Yangtse river.
Partly cloudy tonight and Tuesday with thunderstorms in the south portion. Cooler tonight in the county with a warmer afternoon. West end forecast shows a chance of light rain today and noon temperatures near maximum yesterday and minimum today. Clear conditions expected overall with good air quality and service mentions from local businesses.

Hollis Thurston pitched a second straight brilliant exhibition, holding the Boston Braves to two hits as Brooklyn Robins won 2 to 0. The Robins scored in the fourth on seven hits off Cantwell, adding another in the sixth. Other notes include a Reds win in the doubleheader and a Giants 5-4 victory over the Phillies with Bill Terry collecting four hits including two homers.
Riots and violence shake Parahuba after the liberal vice presidential candidate Joao Pessoa is assassinated. Dispatches report one death and several homes burned as Jose Pereira leads armed resistance near Princesa. Over four months of conflict have left hundreds dead in clashes between rebels and state police.
In Netherfield Liverpool, Catholics and Protestants rioted after rumors of a visit by Archbishop Richard Downey. Police patrolled the area all night with ambulances on standby as nine people, including three officers, were injured. The mob then attacked a police court where detainees from the prior day were to appear before a magistrate.
A blaze at Houston Oil Company’s wild gas well No. 1 Straud near Refugio Texas forced about 200 residents to flee. An explosion Saturday night created a 200 foot crater. Fire crews and steam lines moved to smother the flames as two frame buildings burned and others were moved to safety.
Dallas July 28 mounting returns from Saturdays Democratic primary show no change in the governor race, with a runoff August 23 between Miriam A Ferguson of Austin and Ross Sterling of Houston. Ferguson leads Sterling by 38 716 votes from 244 of 253 counties, with 695 334 votes total.

Washington July 28 AP Senator Capper visited the White House to bid farewell to President Hoover before returning to Topeka. He proposed the farm board remove 100 million bushels of wheat to lift prices, but Chairman Legge declined. Capper also floated selling wheat products in China while planning no campaign work in Kansas ahead of the GOP primary.
The city commission passed ordinances creating lateral Sewer District Number 1 in North Lawrence to fund sewers. It also authorized grading Fifth Street from Maine to Wisconsin and Michigan Street north to the city line, with county work funded by the city. The Fritz brick pillar near Eighth and New Hampshire is to be removed as a traffic hazard. The city tax of 50 dollars per pump at Fred Williams filling station must be paid or the pumps removed.
In London July 28 AP Stribling from Macon Ga crushes Phil Scott English heavyweight in two rounds after four knockdowns first round. Scott weighed 206, Stribling 188. Crowd 30 000 to 35 000 sets prize fight attendance record. Round by round details note Scott down nine once in bell. Stribling advances to front ranks. Also notes Kansas junior baseball final between Topeka and Salina and Rotary speaker Haskell plans in August.
Ray Engle of Oskaloosa and Leslie Flickenger of 1233 Kentucky street were duped Saturday by a man claiming to be a U S secret service agent named C L Harris. Harris convinced Flickenger to pay 225 dollars for a supposed bond to free a brother in law in Madison Kansas. The suspect fled with the money after meeting Engle in Topeka then returned to Lawrence where the victims learned the arrest claim was false. Harris carried a badge claiming secret service status.
Julius Holmes secretary of the American Legation at Tirana Albania addresses Lawrence Rotarians. He notes Albania's size population and religious influences spanning Catholic Islam and Greek alignment. He highlights appreciation for American school work and mentions only sixteen Americans reside in Albania. Two Powell children sung an item as part of the program.
Yesterday Lawrence and vicinity faced extreme heat as temperatures topped 100. The University of Kansas station logged 97 at noon and motorists battled glare and overheating on highways. Residents expected readings to push past 100 later in the day as the furnace like wind intensified.
Washington reports Roger Q Williams earned a 90 day suspension of his flying license after Bermuda, British territory, protested a flight over its airspace without authorization. The Commerce Department said the protest was justified. Williams was accompanied by Errol Boyd, a Canadian. Final tribute to Colonel Samuel G. Clarke was paid at 3 p.m. at Rumsey funeral home with military and political associates present. The service honored his roles as a soldier, legislator, and leader at the Boys Industrial School, with Governor Reed represented and a firing squad from the Kansas National Guard present.
