Washington Supreme Court upholds gay marriage ban shock supporters

The Washington Supreme Court ruled 5-4 to uphold the state ban on same sex marriage and keep the 1998 Defense of Marriage Act intact. The decision surprised many in liberal Seattle and drew mixed reactions from lawmakers and gay rights advocates. The court invited legislative review of the hardship caused by the ban. Civil unions were proposed as a next step by King County officials, with broad implications across the state where 45 states ban or limit same sex marriage.
