A report on Wichita State University buildings cites leaky pipes sloping floors fogging windows and crumbling brickwork. It estimates more than 600000 needed for repairs and notes state architect delays and lack of AG notification hindered possible legal action.
Sarah Peters acting director since May is named executive director, taking the post August 1 with a 13200 salary. Peters, 36, has worked for the authority since 1974, rising from accounting clerk to assistant director before becoming acting director. The appointment was approved by Kay Calvin and two other members in an executive session.
About twenty Lawrence homes on Tomahawk Drive Rock Fence and Lance Court lost power for nearly five hours Monday after a primary underground cable and transformer malfunctioned. Power returned at 5 30 p m after repairs. Fuses for 60 to 75 more homes were damaged during the repair work causing a 15 minute outage.
Washington AP Congress leaders await formal word on five people DOJ plans to indict in the South Korean influence buying scandal. House Speaker O Neill says he was told indictments are coming but no names. Aides anticipate two indictments in August and three in September.
Eudora City Council approved publication of a 1978 budget raising the city mill levy to 21.369 from 14.53 mills, a 6.83 mill increase to fund fire and police gear and the pool debt. The plan includes a two mill fire levy for a new fire truck and higher police capital outlay, with recreation folded into the general fund. A public hearing is set for August 8 at City Hall.
Lawrence Douglas County Planning Commission meets 6:30 p.m. at First National Bank to consider Clinton Lake Estates subdivision 275 acres and rezoning requests near Clinton Lake. The panel also to adopt Plan 95 and review shopping district zoning and other land use actions.
