Federal jurors found Meyer Lansky not guilty on all three counts of evading taxes on gambling profits. The 71 year old, ill defendant was not in court as the verdict came after about four hours of deliberation in a trial shortened by his health.
The Douglas County Commission appointed five residents to the Topeka Area Agency on Aging board. Richard M. Raney, Mrs. Francisco Chavez, Mrs. Leonard McClanahan, Mrs. Charles Springer, and Mrs. O. H. Correa will join to review Older Americans Act fund requests as Douglas, Shawnee, and Jefferson counties collaborate.
Mark Dill 61 of Winchester was admitted to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for observation after an industrial accident at the Cooperative Farm Chemicals Assn plant on Route 2. Dill was struck by steam and acid when a line broke during cleaning. plant superintendent Charles Lanning said he remained in fairly good condition.
Betty Wolfe, representative of the Daughters of the American Revolution, was omitted from the list of members appointed Tuesday to the Lawrence Bicentennial Commission and was later included. The commission aims to commemorate Lawrence's bicentennial with community involvement.
Firefighters report four car fires with two heavy losses. A 1968 car owned by Betty Vesco at 19th and Louisiana burned for an estimated $500. Another car owned by Nino Samuel at Jayhawk Boulevard and Sunflower Road burned for about $450. A cigarette caused a car fire at Rex Short’s home with no damage, and a radiator hose incident near TeePee Junction caused no fire. A brush fire on Delbert Paasch property was allowed to burn.
