Maj. James K. Pangman assigned by the Army Corps of Engineers to the Clinton Dam project four miles southwest of Lawrence. Col. W. R. Needham announced the posting as work begins on the $50 million flood control and recreation project aimed at a 6500 acre normal pool with completion hoped for by the late 1970s. Pangman will supervise and inspect portions of the work and later become assistant to the permanent resident engineer. He previously served with the First Army at Clarkson College of Technology Potsdam NY where he earned a master's in civil engineering. Since entering the Army in 1959 he served in Germany Korea Vietnam and stateside, and he and his wife Joan and four children live in Overland Park.

Seven Douglas County 4-H members earned purple or blue ribbons at the District 4-H Horse Show in Ottawa, qualifying for the Kansas 4-H Horse Show at the state fair in Hutchinson. Joy Miller of Kanwaka 4-H Club led in American saddlebred showmanship and three gaited English pleasure, with a blue in senior showmanship. Mike Fine of Jayhawk earned a purple in barrel racing and blue in reining, western pleasure, and western horsemanship for ages 12 to 13 or 14. Vickie Miller and Debbie Miller of Kanwaka won blue in western pleasure for those 16 and older. Debbie Warren of Vinland Valley and Mark Warren won blue in western horsemanship for 13 and older. Kelly Kidman of Jayhawk and Susan Hyde of Kanwaka received ribbons in hunt seat equitation.
