Japanese beetles emerge as pests in Lawrence area
Japanese beetles are appearing in Lawrence, closely related to green June beetles. They feed on almost any plant, start defoliating from the top, and can be hand-picked into alcohol or soapy water. Insecticides threaten natural predators and may require reapplication. traps may attract more beetles. Grubs live underground feeding on turf roots, with control advised only when counts exceed ten per square foot. Jennifer Smith of K State Extension Douglas County offers ID and guidance.
