Atchison Kansas July 26 the coal mine completed and ready for operation at a cost of 200,002 was shut down and leaking water. About 100 employees have been laid off. The shutdown stems from a wage scale dispute between operators and the miners union.
The Chau tauqua County Producers' Association led by William Gelser of Paris and 5. E. Sadler of Sedan calls on producers to halt new walls to curb oil output. They warn prices will rise as supply tightens. Secretary Wilson of Fort Scott reports death of Mrs. Nancy Bell in Washington from heart disease.
Secretary Taft and party arrive in Yokohama aboard the steamship Manchuria. A Houston fire at Humble Texas burns through tanks at the Texas company plant. Twelve men, all described as African American, are confirmed dead while efforts to contain the blaze continue. Baron Komura peace plenipotentiary arrives from Chicago to New York meeting about forty Japanese merchants at Jersey City and over a hundred more cheer at the ferry. Consul General Uchida accompanies him to the Waldorf Astoria. No definite program set. plans to be decided after consultations with Minister Takahiro. The baron will rest a few days before further steps.
U S surveyors report that Richford East Richford and Stevens Mills lie within Canada, suggesting boundary realignment effects. The region, several miles long and up to a mile wide, houses about 4500 people and includes Richford as a key U S outpost with a Chinese detention station.

Stockholm July 25 The rikstag crisis committee delivers a unanimous report stating the government bill cannot be adopted and proposes that the riksdag signal in congress to negotiate with Norway for a dissolution of the union if Norway’s newly elected parliament requests repeal of the act and dissolution after a plebiscite shows Norwegians favor dissolution. The cabinet has resigned.
Charles Hart of Cleveland complains to Washington about charges billed by Consul General Hector de Castro at Rome after his daughter Gudgarta Hart married Baron Jules Takacs de Kisjoka. Hart says 850 was paid at first and 200 more billed later, calling the fee extortionate. Ades favors settlement by the consul without department help.

Miners, warned to protect water supply and forage for their horses, attacked the herd. many animals were killed. Owners resisted. details remain limited.

An early morning gas stove explosion at Lov Titus's Braddock home in Pittsburgh left two dead, two fatally burned, and three others seriously injured. Mrs Titus had been preparing breakfast when the stove overturned igniting a blaze that swept the room and set a five gallon can alight.
Nathan Newman a 20 year old New York resident perished in a Brooklyn tenement fire after guiding his mother and sister to safety. Earlier he saved several others from the flames as the building occupants fled.
MISCONDUCT IS CHARGED Winfield Kansas July 25 charges of personal misconduct leveled against CS Newton superintendent of the state hospital school and the board of control will soon open an investigation. The charges come from Miss Barney recently discharged from the institution and the situation implies forthcoming testimony. St Petersburg July 25 ministry of finance plans 50 million annual new taxes on the well to do including income and inheritance taxes as part of Russian tax reform. Topeka July 25 harvest hands A S Roding and F J Lattimer saved 19 between them for tickets home and were robbed by two negro women after arriving in Topeka. Tulsa July 25 J Z Smith plumber chloroformed and robbed of 740 at his home during the night with no knowledge of the crime until morning.
Kansas City markets show cattle at mostly strong to mixed bids with 9,000 head including native steers and stockers, calves trading around 3 to 4 per unit, hogs around 5 to 6, and bulls near 2.60 to 4.45. Chicago and Kansas City futures reflect shifts in cattle, hogs, and grains with July and September contracts listed for wheat, corn, and beans, plus pork and lard price points across the board.
United States Senator Stitchell was convicted of aging his aid to advance the law practice of Mitchell & Tanner in Portland Oregon. He was fined 1000 and ordered to six months penal servitude. The execution is deferred pending Supreme Court review and he will be placed under guard.
In New York on July 25 Charles Marshall, a Wall Street broker, found his wife unconscious after she left a note asking him not to blame him for what would happen. She died shortly after.
