Water Rates Rise Four Percent In Lawrence For 2007

Typical Lawrence water users should expect about a 4 percent increase in their water rates for 2007. The city faces uncertain increases for 2008 and beyond as treatment costs rise faster than inflation and participation in a Clinton Lake tapping program adds expense. Interim utilities director Chris Stewart says the 4 percent hike is acceptable for 2007, but future year costs will require closer scrutiny. Chemical costs for treatment have climbed about 15 percent, and electricity costs have also risen about 15 percent.
