Washington reports that a plan to double air supplies to besieged Berlin shows strong evidence that Americans will resist evacuation from the capital. Gen. Lucius D. Clay and officials outline boosting fuel and food deliveries, adding more aircraft, and upgrading Templehof operations to relieve bottlenecks and increase daily tonnage toward 4,800 tons.
The Lithuanian amber industry, once nearly wiped out by war, shows signs of revival. Palanga hosts the amber refining hub as locals, many generations in the trade, face harsh conditions and shifting fortunes. Legends link amber to Lithuanian royalty while weather and waves continually scatter the raw material along the shore.

Two sites were rural Wyandotte, two in the city. Three had been attacked after March raids but reopened. County Attorney Harold J Harding vowed no more leniency and promised the places will never reopen while he holds office.
The Kansas Corporation Commission set an August crude oil allowable of 300 000 barrels daily, up 5 000 from July and 10 000 from June. Director T A Morgan of Wichita backed the move, noting pipeline capacity and postwar limits as factors.
Detroit today announced a price increase of about six percent on all passenger cars. The move goes into effect Monday, GM citing rising wages and material costs. The CIO United Auto Workers had earlier secured a wage rise, with adjustments likely in September. This marks GM’s first general price hike since August 1947.

Ganien City Kansas July 24 Thirty nine persons were injured when a westbound Santa Fe Trailways bus collided with a truck carrying 560 gallons of gasoline. The crash sent the truck 66 feet into a ditch but the fuel remained unignited. Ambulances transported victims to Dodge City and Ganien City hospitals with fourteen hospitalized in Dodge City and twelve in Ganien City. The truck driver said he halted to extinguish a fire caused by a backfire, then the bus struck as he emerged. Luggage damage caused many injuries. A severely injured woman was taken to St Antony’s hospital in Dodge City and identified in a handbag as Jennie Jo Felkins.
Patrons of the consolidated Pleasant Valley and Mandel districts in Wakarusa township plan a Monday night meeting at the Pleasant Valley school house. Agenda includes naming the new district and electing board members to serve until the spring annual meeting. Current board members from Pleasant Valley and Model-Robert M. Ice and Emma Pugh are listed among others.
A creditor attached the airplane used by James A McClain of Sabetha in his bid for the Republican nomination for governor. The plane was seized at Fairfax airport awaiting bond or satisfaction of a mortgage claimed by E A Myers. An August 2 hearing was set before Judge C Clyde Myers in city court. McClain was absent when the action occurred.
County Budget Director Mildred LeSner announces a 1.32 mill drop in the 1948 county tax levy due to a $1.8 million increase in tangible property valuation. The 1949 budget totals 3753.95.40 with a required 1842 mill levy. public hearing set for August 11 at the courthouse.
State highway department lists several routes still closed by floodwaters including US 40 west of Solomon CS 59 and 164 of Humboldt. Detours provided on VS 59 south of Erie and other local roads near Shaw Iola Chanute Custesville and Lavetey. Some segments remain closed north of Concordia Bat Cyne Enterprise and Ottawa Pomona area with zone 26 near Graporia Potwine.
In Topeka July 24 M W Buffon acting director of the state employment security division announced a big reduction in unemployment payments to Kansans. Last week 1698 servicemen readjustment allowance checks were written the fewest since the war began. State unemployment checks fell to 2603 the lowest since last November. Buffon said servicemen allowances are 45 percent lower than the same months last year and state payments are down 23 percent.
The $350,000 resurfacing project on 12 miles of Highway AN linking Baldwin Station to the Douglas Osage county line is finished and open to traffic. Work began last summer and was tested this spring after delays in late winter. The low bid came from Concrete Materials Co, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Cook and Vane Co, Ottawa, at the Douglas County courthouse. The contract included grading scarifying old pavement materials resurfacing with a high performance bituminous seal atop crushed rock and a gravel surface on much of the 18 miles of detour to handle heavy traffic.
Eisenhower and Dewey affirmed absolute firmness in Berlin amid the blockade. They agreed to pursue a peaceful solution and to not neglect avenues for a settlement. Dewey planned a dinner with Vandenberg and Dulles, and spoke to 75 farm editors about grain there.
Mrs. William Allen White will receive the first commemorative stamps sheet in Emporia on July 31 at a luncheon. Nelson B. Wentzril will present it with Rep. Ed Rees, Gov. Frank Carlson, and Charles Ker wick in attendance. about 500,000 stamps to be issued. President Truman plans a quick trip to Independence, Missouri, around August 3 for the Missouri Democratic primary, with plans possibly revealing Monday.

City clerk Harold Fisher announced the names of 190 judges and clerks for the August 3 primary election in Lawrence. Each precinct will have a five member receiving board and a five member counting board, with Republican and Democratic county chairmenDesignated members and one member chosen by the mayor. Registration rushes crowded city hall with 278 of 409 registrations occurring between 6 and 10 pm. Registrations close again August 4 for the November general election.
