Lawrence area economy shows mixed signals in midyear review
Douglas County unemployment rose to 6.2 percent in June from 4.3 percent in 2008, below Kansas and Topeka rates but higher than Manhattan. Real estate activity fell 19 percent with 772 sales, average home price down 6.6 percent to 185000, while inventory tightens and days on market shrink for existing homes. New construction lags, with single family and duplex permits down about 22 percent. Lawrence expects under 80 such permits for the year, as builders and trades face a downturn and job losses amid a slower economy.
