Roanoke Tragedy Spurs Stronger Local Gay Community

In Roanoke Virginia a deadly September shooting at the Backstreet Cafe and an ensuing trial of Ronald E Gay have spurred new gay rights activism and community support. Local clergy say openness is rising as fundraisers for victims and a memorial vigil draw large turnout while niche groups and outreach efforts grow. The city, though deeply religious, shows tolerance for openly gay life and safer surroundings compared with more distant areas.

Secrets spouses keep reveal a quarrel with truth

A Reader's Digest poll shows about 40 percent of married Americans admit keeping secrets from their spouses. The most common secret is how much they spend, with 48 percent concealing the real price of purchases. About 15 percent hide work failures or a child's behavior, and 2 percent admit an extramarital affair. The Ipsos NPD survey of 1,000 couples in March notes 16 percent wished they were not married at times.
