Indiana ends policy counting food stamps against other benefits

Indiana officials will stop reducing a state grocery benefit for hundreds of developmentally disabled residents because they receive food stamps. The change follows talks with federal officials after a lawsuit by a 26 year old autistic Indianapolis man and prior Associated Press reporting. Legal experts note federal law since 1964 bars counting food stamps as income or shrinking other public benefits.

Afghan shootings cast doubt on growing Afghan forces

Two Western civilian trainers were killed when an Afghan army sergeant opened fire at a northern base. Earlier a southern attack killed three British troopers, including the company commander. NATO questions rise over rapid recruitment of 85,000 to 134,000 by 2011 and the push to hand over security to Afghan forces by 2014.

She described poisoning them first and then strangling them with wire, and hung up before being called back by a dispatcher.

Historic financial overhaul signed into law in Washington

Barack Obama signed the broad financial overhaul aimed at restraining Wall Street excesses and protecting consumers. The law, applauded as the strongest consumer protections in U.S. history, creates a consumer bureau, gives regulators new powers to liquidate large firms, and tightens oversight while extending two-year timelines for writing regulations. Republican opposition, including Rep. Mike Pence and John Boehner, argues it burdens small banks and could slow job growth.

Homeland Security used political filter on FOIA requests

In a year long practice, DHS routed hundreds of FOIA requests to political advisers for scrutiny, delaying disclosures. Internal emails show officials gathered data on requesters and organizations, and even GOP or Democratic labels for congressmen. The practice, halted after AP inquiry, drew concern over political interference in open government.

Blagojevich declines testify in high risk trial move

In Chicago, former governor Rod Blagojevich surprises by not taking the stand after defense rests. Lawyers say the decision trades a potential cross examination for a dangerous jury perception while the defense contends his silence changes the prosecution’s strategy. Blagojevich faces charges of scheming to sell Obama’s Senate seat and plotting a racketeering operation.
