School district gains land but students may stay put
The state order transfers land from Chapman to Abilene school district but many Chapman transfer students plan to stay. Fifty four students in the transfer zone have asked to attend Chapman this fall, about 67 percent of those eligible. Chapman Superintendent Frieze notes more out of district requests may come as parents voice intent to keep their children in Chapman. Abilene officials say funding changes complicate shifts, while Chapman seeks to overturn the transfer order in Shawnee County District Court citing residency issues tied to former state board member Scott Hill.
