Spacemen Back At Cape Today Amid Prisoner Exchange Talks
U S officials declined comment on rumors that 19 captured North Vietnamese sailors may be involved in any prisoner swap for American pilots. The Saigon command reported capture of sailors from torpedo boats in the Gulf of Tonkin. Discussions on applying Geneva conventions to prisoners involve seven powers with Viet Nam stakes, including the United States, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, the Philippines, and both Vietnams. Former Vice President Nixon urged keeping Hanoi guessing on pilots’ fate, while Congress members pressed for a warning that trials could derail peace. The Defense Department reclassified 29 missing sailors as captured, raising the total to 63.
