Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev canceled his three week August trip to Scandinavia citing hostile receptions. He said he would only visit places where his message can be helpful. The cancellation followed a reception at the Soviet Embassy in Warsaw celebrating his friendship tour of Poland.
Joseph D. Dailey of Richland and Lawrence moved to California in 1925 and died July 18 in Los Angeles after a heart attack. Isaac Lemuel Montgomery 80, a Pleasant Grove farmer, elder of Willow Springs Church, dies at home. funeral at Willow Springs Church Friday. In Long Beach California the Miss USA finals select 15 contestants from 46 and determine the American entries for the Miss Universe contest. Tonight the judges tally scores to decide finalists with Miss Korea honored as Miss Personality and Miss England named most photogenic.
Eva Hetzel 88 of Route 2 died today at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after months of illness. She and her husband Park Hetzel Sr. founded Lawrence Transfer and Storage Co. and she retired after his death. She was active in Adah Chapter 7 Eastern Star and other groups. Survivors include daughter Mrs Ed Arndt, son Park Hetzel Jr, and three grandchildren. Funeral arrangements by Rumsey Funeral Home pending.
In the Police Court Hugh G. Scott of Kansas City Missouri was fined twenty five dollars for drunkenness. Lloyd M Shelhorse of Sutherlin Virginia received thirty days for vagrancy.
Leonard Johnson Route 5 fined five dollars for no registration and Wilkerson John C. 919 Ind. St. fined five dollars for driving in a wrong way on a one way street. Vacation Pak service advertised by Your Journal World carrier.
About 300 residents watch a 140 yard long hole open near the air field as ground subsidence accelerates after a week of widening cracks. Geologist Don Weaver attributes it to runoff from nearby mountains eroding an ancient lava shelf causing subsidence that may continue days longer.
President Eisenhower urged Congress to pass measures on labor control road construction and farm policy. He said no must list exists, but top priorities include funding for interstate highways, a strong farm bill, and labor reforms based on McClellan committee findings. He noted possible gasoline tax increases and voiced concern over wheat policy. Gary Stanwix, 13, suffered a broken right foot in a two vehicle wreck on Missouri Street. The Kansas Highway Commission withdrew a three year old bid to include U S 69 in eastern Kansas on the interstate system. It also urged a new interstate from I 35 near Otis to the Oklahoma line and to add the Topeka Emproria turnpike segment to the interstate map.
The county increases the building fund from 1.87 to 4.81 mills with state approval. City rejects a pay-as-you-go plan, opting to avoid another mill hike this year. Budgets for township and other cities pending, with final county totals from General Fund to High School Equalization up. County valuation rises to 70,342,515 from 67,273,513.
Kansas University Chancellor Franklin D. Murphy and Mrs. Murphy will fly to San Jose Costa Rica for a 10 day combined business and vacation trip. He chairs the executive committee of the Council on Higher Education in the American Republics and will outline agenda plans for the Santiago Chile meeting next February.

The elder says Alaska holds tremendous allure and they have long planned travel to the distant state. The father notes the son’s Florida Chamber of Commerce view and passion for water skiing.

He stressed progress in civil rights relies on education and moral responsibility, and weighed Germany’s role and nuclear war risks with emphasis on West Germany’s strength and allied security.

Fourteen cases of beer were taken from the McDonald Warehouse near the Santa Fe tracks early this morning after a break in through the front door. Police said an earlier attempt to enter via the rear sliding doors failed and nothing else was disturbed.
In Chicago Ralph Goldberg claimed sleepwalking, but police charged him and accomplice Lisciandrella with conspiracy after Goldberg entered room 1238 from 1242 where a jewelry convention was underway. He had hotel room keys from Lisciandrella and wife posing as Mr and Mrs Noto of Los Angeles.
Ree Coldren, 38, a University of Kansas graduate and World War II veteran with 14 years of newspaper experience, is named night editor of the Hutchinson News. He succeeds Fred Wulfekuhler, who has purchased a controlling interest in the Paragould Daily Press in Arkansas.
