Crews plug leak in Baldwin water pipe near Lawrence

Water use in Baldwin continued despite a damaged pipe discovered near Lawrence. Jayhawk Excavating drained parts of the Baker Wetlands to access the underground pipe carrying Lawrence water to Baldwin. A sensor detected the leak Thursday night along Douglas County Road 1055. Crews located the hole Friday and repaired it into the evening. Baldwin’s service remained uninterrupted. A new storage tank at Baldwin’s northwest edge was expected to maintain supply and pressure until repair completion.

State to restore 24-7 abuse hot line in Kansas

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius announced that Kansas will reconnect its round-the-clock abuse hot line after budget cuts had limited calls to office hours. SRS will operate in-house starting Aug. 19 with staff taking reports 24 hours a day at the toll-free number 800-922-5330.

Governor Seeks Kansas State Quarter Designs

Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius invites residents to submit design ideas for the Kansas state quarter due 2005. Submissions by Sept 10 to the Kansas Commemorative Coin Design Commission. five narratives will be chosen, with Kansas high school students voting in April 2004.

Red Dog marks 20 years of Red Dog Days workouts

Costa Rica leads raise hope in slaying probe

Jeanette Stauffer, mother of Shannon Martin, says her two year wait for justice may be ending as Kansas investigators helped in Costa Rica. Larry Thomas of the KBI and interpreter Jesse Ybarra spent 10 days examining new leads in Golfito after Shannon, a KU honors student, was stabbed to death on May 13 2001. The report notes temporary optimism and new avenues in the case.

Chemical fire at Peak Chemical sparks heavy smoke plume

A mechanical failure sparked a chemical fire Friday at Peak Chemical, a phosphorus pentasulfide plant in North Lawrence. No injuries occurred as 11 employees were evacuated and nearby roads were barricaded while officials monitored the situation. Smoke dissipated with light humidity and officials deemed the incident a manageable event.
