Potawatomi Language Institute aims to revive dying tongue
Twenty five students from Canada, Michigan, Wisconsin, Kansas and Oklahoma attend the Potawatomi Language Institute at Haskell Indian Nations University to revive Potawatomi. Elders and linguists say the program enriches culture and teaches speakers to pass on skills to future generations. The institute runs through August 1 with goals to sustain fluent speakers and materials for the language.

Freeman retires as longtime Lawrence auctioneer
Loren Freeman bid farewell at Building 21 of the Douglas County 4 H Fairgrounds ending more than two decades as Lawrence auctioneer. He accepted cards and gifts as two large cakes were cut, thanking Mike Holladay and Mark Elston who run local auction businesses for their help. Freeman, slowed by three strokes since last Christmas, plans retirement with his wife Marjorie and a simple life traveling rarely, preferring time with his cattle on a southeast Kansas farm.
