Hershey's school and its enduring Hershey vision
The Hershey Industrial School, opened in 1909 for needy and orphaned boys, aimed to teach trades for self sufficiency. Alumni recall Hershey as a kind benefactor while critics say vocational focus shifts toward college prep. The school now operates 97 homes on 1400 acres with a $70 million town center plan and multiple campuses, preserving core values of discipline and service.
