Conviction Upheld in Prison Disturbance Death Case
The Kansas Supreme Court unanimously upheld Willard Parnell Mathenia’s first degree murder and aggravated battery convictions from the May 1993 Lansing prison disturbance that left corrections officer Mark Avery dead and officer Michael Bidatsch seriously injured. The justices rejected claims of an unlawful speedy-trial delay, noting Mathenia’s actions and late challenge contributed to the delay. He remains ineligible for parole until 2048.
