President Roosevelt unexpectedly entered the Democratic vice presidential scramble and listed Henry A. Wallace’s possible successors. Truman and Douglas emerge as top rivals as delegates and leaders discuss the plan ahead of the convention’s finish.
Rome dispatch reports Fifth Army forces captured Livorno a few hours after Polish troops seized Ancona. German resistance was light, with street fighting avoided as troops occupied the great port near Pisa. Allied advances also included Ancona, Pontedera, Arezzo area gains, and Eighth Army progress along the Adriatic coast.
Navy and Pacific forces press Guam and nearby targets with battleships spotter planes and cruisers joining the attack. MacArthur cites air strikes sinking 25 ships and damaging more while halting enemy shipping near Halmahera and Wewak.
Western Kansas rains slowed wheat harvesting in the week ended yesterday but left soil in good condition for post harvest plowing the weekly weather and crop report said today. The downpours slowed harvest and caused lodging bleaching and decline in test weight, while row crops progressed due to moderate temperatures and ample soil moisture. Bare soil moisture was reported in many eastern and north central counties.
Dr H W Craig suffered a cut over the right ear in a three car crash at Ninth and Tennessee streets shortly after 9 am. His car traveling south on Tennessee was struck by a machine driven east on Ninth by Mrs L G Carter. The Craig car rolled but was righted after hitting a car coming north on Tennessee driven by Mrs Maurice Keys.
London and southern England faced the greatest 24 hour robot bomb attack since June as Allied air power pounded the German war machine. Churchill cited 2752 killed and 8000 hospitalized in the London bombardment as Britain endured bombs and dramatic rescue work.
Chongqing July 19 Chinese counterattacking forces have broken the ring around Hengyang on the Canton Hankow railway. They have reached within two to three and a half miles of the city where relief forces fire can be heard. Japanese troops retreating north from Leiyang, with reinforcements reported. American planes support the ground offensive as Hengyang braces for a decisive battle.
London reports Josef Grohe, 42, chief officer of Hitler’s elite guard, named reich commissioner for occupied Belgium and northern France. Infantry Gen Grabe given military command of the Reich. The move places the Gestapo in direct control of the remaining ungoverned area in occupied Europe.
British forces smashed a major German counterattack near Caen and pushed five miles southeast toward Paris while Americans cleared St Lo and cut the St Lo Periers corridor. Montgomery estimated 15,000 German losses since June 6 as troops pressed along the Orne and Vire fronts.
Vice President Wallace arriving to lead his renomination bid met labor leaders backing him. He held a hotel room briefing with Sidney Fulbron and Philip Murray as well as James Carey and C. B. Baldwin, key figures on labor political action committees.
Douglas County voters authorized a county court to begin after January 1 1945. The county commissioners passed the resolution at the urging of the Douglas County Bar Association, which includes 19 attorneys and two justice of the peace candidates. The 1945 budget will fund the court, and Farm Security Association was notified it will need quarters in the courthouse starting January 1 1945, with offices in the northeast corner of the second floor.
Dr. Alexander Wetmore has been elevated to head of the Smithsonian Institute upon the retirement of Dr. C G Abbot. A noted biologist and ornithologist born in Wisconsin in 1886, he earned his degrees at the University of Kansas and George Washington University and has long served in the Smithsonian institutions.
Washington July 1971 The navy announced that 14 more Japanese vessels including two combatant ships were sunk or damaged by American submarines. The record shows 806 vessels sunk probably sunk or damaged, with 654 sunk, 37 probably sunk and at least 118 damaged. A call for two men for induction was received by the Douglas County selective service office for Monday, August 2.

Alexander, who left Kansas in 1940 as a second lieutenant, served in the 137th Infantry and later as an executive officer in a new regiment. he fought in Italy and earned several decorations. His brother, Pvt. Edwin A. Alexander, is also a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne.
Potato digging in the Kaw Valley area near Lawrence should finish by week’s end if weather holds, says Alfred Heck and Sons. Harvest yield is below normal with fair quality. prices ranged up to 3.50 per hundred for No 1 wart a and 2.90 for cobblers, later dropping to around 2.25. Volunteers aided picking and a 10 cent per bushel wage was paid to pickers, two cents higher than last season, as stock still to ship remains light with 128 cars reported through July 17 versus 449 last year, Kansas-Missouri bulletin notes.
A group of eight white men departed Lawrence this morning for Fort Leavenworth to take pre-induction physicals for military service. Lawrence is among about 40 Kansas and Missouri cities under study for a large general hospital to be built and operated by the government.
Sam F. Anderson will speak on The Russian Language at 7 30 tonight in the Little Theater in Green Hall. The Kansas instructor will trace the language’s development its relation to European tongues and its use in literature. It’s the third in a five lecture Russia series arranged by Professor Ashton and Anderson. A tractor overturn caused a fire near highway 10. Harry Richardson suffered no injuries, though tires and machine were damaged.
